First serving as a small summer residence for the wealthy Sloane family and then expanded from its modest 1908 size into a sprawling mansion and converted into a visual arts museum, The Hermitage Foundation Museum speaks to both the arts and the lives of past members of this elite family. Guided tours of the mansion feature the nearly 3,000 pieces of art in the Sloane Collection, dating as far back as the Neolithic period. Outside the home, beautiful gardens combine natural scenery, imported plants and sculpture, offering the chance for a quiet, scenic stroll or a relaxing rest on a shaded bench. The home is located north of the city, close to the Norfolk Naval Base and the harbor.
Open Mon. - Tue. and Thurs. - Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sun. 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Closed Wed.
Adults $5; College students $3; Children (6-18) $2; Children 5 and under are free.
