Opened for use in 1919, Attucks Theatre is the oldest theater in the country that was designed, built and financed by the African American community. Named after the first African American man who died in the Revolutionary War, the theater went through a period of disuse before reopening as a music and performing arts venue, offering educational and community outreach programs. It is located on historic Church Street, about half a mile northeast of Scope Arena and the Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby-Baylor House.
